Bird Conservation

Communities in Action

Since 1999, Nature Canada’s Communities in Action program has helped implement critical on-the-ground conservation efforts at Canada’s Important Bird Areas. We support community groups and community members in their efforts to conserve this country’s birds by becoming stewards of a local Important Bird Area. Many people and groups take part in the Communities in Action program, including educators, environmental organizations, naturalists, municipal groups and university researchers.

Specifically, the Communities in Action program invests in education, conservation, habitat restoration, and research and monitoring projects at IBAs Nature Canada considers to be high priorities.

Successes include

More than $400,000 invested in on-the-ground projects.
Support for more than 140 Communities in Action projects.
Conservation projects at nearly 100 IBAs.
Thousands of volunteer hours donated.

Nature Canada and Bird Studies Canada are Canadian co-partners delivering BirdLife International’s Important Bird Areas program in Canada. We aim to identify, monitor and protect a global network of IBAs for the conservation of the world’s birds and other biodiversity.
