Great Plains Toad (Bufo cognatus)

  • Found in southern Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba
  • Call is lengthy, and consists of a rapidly repeated chatter
  • Calling begins in mid-spring after heavy rains
  • Grey, brown or green
  • Numerous "warts" per dark blotch
  • Cranial crests diverge behind the eye
  • Breeds in temporary or permanent wetlands
