Robert Bateman Get to Know Contest Winners
The 2010 calendar, featuring winning artwork and writing from the 2009 Get to Know Contest, is now available! Nature Canada, as the Premiere Partner of this year's contest, is proud to announce the winners of the 2009 Robert Bateman Get to Know Contest. The response from youth across Canada this year was astonishing and contest judges were impressed by the many extraordinary art, writing and digital photography entries. Events to congratulate the winners were held on June 11 (Western Canada) and June 19 (Eastern Canada). By encouraging Canadian youth to get outdoors and 'get to know' wildlife in local natural areas, zoos and aquariums, the Get to Know Contest promotes a deeper understanding of nature and a more active role in protecting the future of our planet and the wildlife that inhabits it. "For nature photography it's easier to find beauty than urban photography," said digital photography winner Milica Markovic of Abbotsford, BC. "You feel calm after a time in nature. The contest is a really good idea, a great opportunity, and everyone should take a chance and try. I never expected to win; it was a total surprise." "It is inspiring to see so many young Canadians, who are entering the contest, are getting outside to observe their wild neighbours first hand," notes Bateman. "Getting to know our neighbours of other species is the beginning to understanding why biodiversity is so important to life on Earth. Canadians should be proud of the amazing talent of their young artists, writers and naturalists. I certainly am!" Winning entries are published in the 2010 Robert Bateman Get to Know Contest Calendar, which is distributed across Canada and can be sold by schools to fundraise in an environmentally friendly manner.
