Wood ducks

Lyda Salatian from Vancouver, BC took this photo of a male and female wood duck hanging out on a log at Burnaby Park, BC. The male wood duck has colourful plumage while the female has less showy plumage. Wood ducks were considered scarce in the early 1900s but because of legislation to protect them they are now secure.

Mated pairs like beaver ponds that provide areas to feed, nest, and bring up young. Just a few feet away from the spot where this picture was taken is a beaver lodge.

Lyda took this picture as the sun was going down and was watching this Wood duck pair swim close together for some time, never straying too far from each other, until they perched on the log providing an opportunity to take a photograph showing off their plumage.
