Meet donor and volunteer Frogwatcher Steve Racey.

Steve didn’t hesitate a second when we asked him why he gives so generously of his time and money to Nature Canada.

“I choose to give to Nature Canada because as an organization it’s very diverse. I consider myself a naturalist and I like how Nature Canada is involved in protecting all kinds of Canadian nature. I like how I’m supporting not only birds or frogs – but a wide gamut of wildlife and their habitats.”

Steve and his wife Elaine are also our newest NatureBuilders, a giving club for donors who make annual contributions equaling $500 or more. Steve and Elaine choose to make a $42 gift each and every month. “My love for nature is what keeps me giving monthly, even when I was unemployed. We’re not wealthy, but it’s important to donate to something you believe in.”

With environmental awareness on the rise, Steve is encouraged to see others standing up for their beliefs as well. “I’m happy to see people’s mindsets changing. It seems like a lot of Canadians are starting to take steps in the right direction and making greener choices,” he says.

“As humans we tend to be selfish, but we have to consider what kind of legacy are we leaving behind. Without money, organizations like Nature Canada couldn’t do the incredible work that they do. It’s rewarding to know your donations are helping to leave a better world for the future.”

As an avid FrogWatcher in Nature Canada’s FrogWatch program, Steve has identified and helped to collect data on several different frog species across Southern Ontario. He and fellow Frogwatchers are helping track important data about frog populations that indicate changes affecting our environment. Considering his frequent wetland excursions a chance to get away from the hectic pace of life, Steve recommends FrogWatching to everyone.

“It’s a good way for families to get together, get outside, get a bit of exercise. It also helps teach kids to respect the natural world. When people’s natural curiosity sets in, that’s when a real love of nature begins and things really start to change.”
