How to Support Us

A Natural Legacy

Judith Carder makes a lasting difference by including Nature Canada in her Will

For Victoria, B.C. resident Judith Carder, a deep love of nature runs in the family.

Her father Dr. A. C. Carder, now age 98, worked as an agricultural research scientist, Canada’s first agro-meteorologist, and in retirement, became an international Big Tree expert. “He witnessed the beginnings of the logging industry – trees so big that one of the stumps was used as a dance floor. You just don’t see trees like that today.”

With her BSc in Biology and diploma in Ecological Restoration, Judith channels her knowledge as a dedicated volunteer at a Garry Oak Ecosystem Restoration site, where she spends her time recording observations, removing invasive plants, planting native species and working to keep the ecosystem as naturally indigenous as possible. “It’s the most threatened ecosystem in Canada and it only occurs on the Southern tip of Vancouver Island,” she says. “It’s going to be very important in the study of climate change.”

Witnessing environmental changes like these inspired Judith to get involved with Nature Canada. “When you begin to understand and appreciate the natural world, you get concerned and you want to support groups that maintain our precious natural resources.”

Growing up, she remembered her parents being proud Nature Canada supporters. “Nature Canada’s magazine has been a wonderful educational tool for me as a young person and now the website and newsletter allows me to maintain a connection with other like-minded people. I enjoy supporting a national organization dedicated to protecting Canada’s natural heritage as a whole.”

It’s an ethic she hopes to pass on to her young nephews, aged 6 and 4. “Every Sunday, my nephews and I hike into the forest with my dad. It’s become a tradition and I’m pleased to say they are budding naturalists and collectors. It’s incredible to watch a 98-year-old teaching a four-year-old about one of his greatest passions.”

Inspired to share her family’s passion with generations to come, Judith has named Nature Canada as a beneficiary in her Will. “Your will is a great way to give back. Even after I’m gone, I can make a difference,” she says. “I can’t think of a better use for your financial legacy than to further good things in the world.”

“We are fortunate to count Judith as a member of our Whittemore Legacy Circle,” says Nature Canada staff member Jodi Joy. “Her dedication is inspiring to all of us and her generosity will not only help preserve and protect nature in Canada, but educate the next generation of children about the natural wonders around them.”
