No matter which country you live in, we all have a stake in a healthy, diverse environment.
If you can’t vote in Canada’s federal election because you’re not a Canadian citizen you can still reach out to elected representatives in your own country. Find out where they stand on nature and the environment. Send them a letter or an email and ask them these questions:
- Will you and your party make genuine best efforts to fashion a new agreement at the 2009 UN climate conference in Copenhagen that will dramatically and equitably reduce global greenhouse gas emissions?
- Will you put a price on carbon that reflects its full social and environmental costs, and that applies broadly our economy as soon as possible?
- What will your party do to ensure that the environment (including habitat for terrestrial and marine wildlife and migratory birds) is protected from the impacts of oil and gas development and shipping?
- What will you do to develop healthy values towards nature in our young people, and address the crisis in our society known as “nature deficit disorder?”
- Will you support a comprehensive water strategy to conserve water through such measures as national appliance water-efficiency standards and the protection and restoration of vulnerable waters?
- Will you commit our nation to becoming a world leader in the production of low-impact renewable sources of electricity, heat and fuels by 2020?
- What will your party do to strengthen endangered species legislation, and its implementation, to ensure that critical habitat of at-risk species is effectively protected?
On your country’s next election day, cast your vote for nature!
