Save the Aerial Insectivores
Aerial insecti-what? Aerial insectivores, birds that feed while in flight, are in serious danger and need your help. From climate change to habitat loss to the decrease in insect population, they need our help more than ever.
About the Problem
Humans have played the leading role in losing our cherished aerial insectivores. The effects of habitat destruction, pesticide use, insect population decline, climate change, and the decline of wetland and grassland habitats, which the birds rely on, are disappearing. The population has dropped by 67% since 1970. Out of the 35 species, including swallows, swifts, nightjars, and flycatchers, 20 have seen a decrease over this period, with some as high as 95%.

About the Solution
Despite the decline levelling off in recent years, this does not mean aerial insectivores are safe. Conservation action is needed to reverse the losses in these vulnerable birds. Our goal is to implement actions to recover aerial insectivore species. We hope to do this by raising awareness, protecting, preserving, and building habitats, and working with more Indigenous reserves such as Mississaugas of the Credit. Another project is to provide beneficial management practices for farmers and rural residents who want to participate in the conservation of these birds.

Conservation action is needed to recover from the losses of the last 50 years. Here’s how you can take action:
- Reduce the use of pesticides and support environmentally healthy pest management strategies.
- Efforts to enhance, conserve, and restore habitats like forests, grasslands, and wetlands.
- Plant native trees, shrubs, and flowering plants to make your property more bird and insect-friendly.
- Climate change, demands addressing the cause and mitigating its effects.
