ASK YOUR CANDIDATES
BE THE VOICE OF NATURE!
When you speak with a politician they know there are hundreds more people who share your values and passion. This is the moment to make sure Nature’s voice is heard!
In Canada and around the world we’re losing nature and species at a faster rate than we can recover them. Every day, more species are at risk of extinction while people face severe threats from climate change, biodiversity loss and other crises.
Here are five questions to ask your local candidates running to be your next Member of Parliament:
1. Do you believe that we have to choose between protecting nature and growing the economy? Or can we do both?
Why it matters: Our natural environment is a source of incredible wealth for Canada. For our economy, our national identity, and our health. As we plan for the future we must recognize that there is no path towards economic prosperity without a healthy environment.
2. Do you support protecting more of Canada’s land, waters, and oceans? Will you support protected areas in your region?
Why it matters: Canada’s natural landscape is part of our cultural identity and protecting and restoring natural areas is critical to reversing species loss and tackling climate change.
3. What role do you think Indigenous Peoples should have in nature conservation?
Why it matters: Indigenous stewardship, traditional knowledge systems, and Indigenous-led conservation programs are proven to be vital to successful conservation and climate planning in Canada.
4. How would you help ensure that industries like mining, oil, and logging are not harming our planet?
Why it matters: The federal government plays a big role in assessing and monitoring the environmental impact of our natural resources including their biodiversity and climate records.
5. How will you work to make sure everyone in our community has equal access to nature?
Why it matters: Access to nature in Canada is sharply divided by race and socio-economic status. Every Canadian should have access to enjoy the benefits from nature’s healing properties
